Advanced techniques for breast reconstruction

Rebuilding the breasts is often a necessary step to getting back to normal life after cancer, but many women are hesitant — especially when it comes to breast implants. However, traditional breast implants are no longer the only option.

When it comes to breast reconstruction, Dr. Maercks uses a variety of techniques (some with natural tissue from your own body) to create a soft, feminine look that will help bring you back to feeling like yourself again.

The goal of breast reconstruction

  • To help the patient feel like herself again
  • To help the patient move past cancer
  • To help intimacy feel more comfortable
  • To help clothing fit better
  • To restore self-image, sense of femininity, and confidence

FAQ

How much does breast reconstruction in Miami cost?

The average cost of breast reconstruction at the Maercks Institute in Miami is from $12,000. You should also check your health insurance policy to see if post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is covered.

Will I need surgery for my other breast?

Many women ask this question if only one breast was removed. Dr. Maercks is an artist, and he will do everything possible to match your reconstructed breast with your natural breast. During your initial consultation, he will discuss your surgical options with you.

When is breast reconstruction done?

Breast reconstruction can be done during the mastectomy, or afterward. Some women begin discussing the reconstruction as soon as they’re diagnosed with cancer. Others may take more time to decide if they want breast reconstruction or not, and therefore undergo the procedure weeks or even years later.

Surgical procedures for breast reconstruction

Dr. Maercks offers the following procedures for breast reconstruction. No matter which procedure is chosen, we’re here to ensure that it is performed safely and successfully. You may be sore for several weeks following surgery, and adjustment time is often necessary once new breasts are created. Our ultimate goal is to help increase your self-confidence by giving your breasts back.

Traditional breast implant reconstruction

Tissue expanders stretch the skin to make a place for implants.

Latissimus dorsi flap method

Donor tissue from the upper back is used to create a pocket for the implant.

Transverse rectus abdominis muscle (TRAM)

Fat and skin are grafted from the abdominal area to create the new breast.

Deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap (DIEP)

Disconnection of blood vessels in the abdominal area and reconnection to those in the chest wall.

Superior gluteal artery perforator (SGAP)

The donor site is a flap from the buttock area.

What to expect

It’s important for breast reconstruction patients to be aware that their newly-constructed breast will not look identical to their natural breast. Dr. Maercks is an artist and a reconstructive specialist, but the goal is restoration — not perfection.

Although it may not be an exact match to the previous breast, most women find their reconstructed breast(s) to be highly satisfying and beneficial to their emotional health and wellbeing.

Who is a good candidate for breast reconstruction?

Every patient is unique and should speak closely with Dr. Maercks before deciding on the right procedure to repair the breast area. Although breast reconstruction may be ideal for many women, not everyone who undergoes a mastectomy will decide it’s right for them. If you’re in the Miami area and you think breast reconstruction is what you want, we welcome you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Maercks. Those who are the best candidates for breast reconstruction are those whose cancer has been completely removed from the body, and who are mentally and emotionally prepared for the procedure.
