What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia (male breasts) is characterized by the growth and appearance of excess breast tissue in males that can make the chest look feminine in an unwanted way. Many boys and men experience this condition, some more extreme than others, and it is often a source of embarrassment. Most individuals who have gynecomastia struggle with it, and will go to lengths to hide their bodies. In some cases, male breasts can even become swollen, tender, or produce discharge. Gynecomastia surgery addresses the condition by flattening the chest where it appears feminine and enhancing it where it could look masculine.

Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery

If you’re considering male breast reduction in Miami, you may be a great candidate for the procedure. Great candidates for this procedure:

  • Are males with breast tissue that is negatively affecting their life
  • Are over the age of 18
  • Are overall healthy non-smokers
  • Have realistic expectations about what gynecomastia surgery can do

Why does gynecomastia develop?

Male breasts can develop for a variety of reasons. Whether the condition is due to weight gain or a glandular issue, causes can include:

  • Weight gain or unstable weight
  • Some medications
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Steroid use
  • Higher-than-normal estrogen levels
  • Genetics
  • Overactive thyroid
  • Kidney disease

Can teenagers get male breast reduction?

Yes, male teenagers can undergo male breast reduction — and it can greatly improve their confidence. However, it’s important to be aware that teenage males may very well outgrow gynecomastia. You should get the opinion of your family doctor before proceeding with male breast reduction, and typically patients should be at least 18 years old when considering the procedure. In addition, every patient is different and will have different results. And even if results from the surgery are excellent, patients may need to have the procedure performed again later in life if the breast tissue continues to develop as they become older.

Gynecomastia surgery details

Gynecomastia surgery involves the use of liposuction to decrease the amount of breast tissue. It is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. Dr. Maercks will make a small incision at the areola and insert a cannula to perform liposuction.

The cannula will break up the fat and suction it out of the body. Once liposuction has been completed, Dr. Maercks will excise any loose skin and will re-shape the chest area to appear more masculine. If the nipple and areola need to be moved, he will do this as well.

Recovery

After gynecomastia surgery, patients need to wear a compression vest for one month to assist in healing. Drains may also be placed to help collect fluids after surgery. Most patients experience soreness in the treated area for a week or two, but this discomfort is very manageable. The majority of patients return to work or school in one week, but sports and exercise should be avoided for at least three weeks.

Results

One of the best things about gynecomastia surgery is that early results are almost immediate. You will notice changes, and final results will become apparent by 3 to 6 months. The scars take a little longer to heal, but will eventually fade. Don’t be alarmed if your scars seem very raised, firm, or red in color. They will “settle” eventually and will not be as noticeable. If you have any questions about the healing process, please don’t hesitate to ask Dr. Maercks during your consultation.
