Why do women get breast reduction surgery?

Many women decide to undergo breast reduction surgery for both cosmetic reasons and to improve their personal health and comfort. Also referred to as a “reduction mammaplasty”, a breast reduction is performed to slenderize the silhouette and to alleviate pain associated with overly large breasts. This can include neck, back, and shoulder pain. During a breast reduction surgery, fat, skin, and glandular tissue are removed. The breasts are then lifted and re-shaped to make them smaller and firmer. Breast reduction surgery can also be used to decrease and correct the size of the nipple and areola.

Breast reduction surgical details

Breast reduction surgeries are performed under general anesthesia and take between 2 and 4 hours to complete. Dr. Maercks will make an anchor-shaped or inverted T-shaped incision surrounding the areola and extending down to the crease below the breast. The skin, fat, and glandular tissue are then removed from the area. Additional fat will be liposuctioned. The nipple and areola are then elevated while the breast is re-shaped and lifted to achieve the desired result. Dr. Maercks will then close the incisions with stitches and cover the area with gauze and/or medical tape.

Good candidates for breast reduction

If you’re thinking about getting a breast reduction in Miami, it may be the perfect procedure for your needs. The best candidates for this surgery are those who:

  • Struggle with large, pendulous breasts
  • Are self-conscious about their shape
  • Experience pain in the neck, shoulders, and/or back, or have shoulder grooving and fold infections
  • Have trouble finding clothing that fits properly
  • Are non-smokers in general good health
  • Have realistic expectations for what breast reduction can accomplish
  • Are not planning to breastfeed
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or less

Recovery and results

You can expect 1 to 2 weeks of recovery time, during which you will need to wear a surgical bra. You may also need to wear drains to collect any fluid accumulation in the surgery site. Patients often experience swelling, bruising, and aching, but medication can be prescribed to help manage this. It’s also good to be aware that swelling resulting from the procedure may cause some loss of feeling in the breast and nipples.

As with other surgeries, some complications can arise following breast reduction surgery. These complications can include bleeding, infection, small, treatable sores around the nipples, asymmetry of the breasts or nipples, and the chance of permanent loss of feeling in the breasts and/or nipples. If you’re concerned about any of these risks, please bring them up to Dr. Maercks during the consultation.

Any swelling and bruising will subside within the first few weeks following your breast reduction; however, it may be anywhere from 6 to 12 months before your new breasts “settle”.

What do I need to wear after my breast reduction?

Immediately after your procedure is complete, you’ll be wrapped in gauze and/or medical tape, and you’ll have to wear a surgical bra for two weeks. After that, you can change to a soft sports bra. You will not be able to wear any sort of underwire bra for three months following surgery.
