You may have loved your tattoo when you first had it done, but as personal preferences and personalities change and evolve, the ink you once felt represented how you felt or who you were doesn’t portray the right picture of how you feel or who you are today. If you’re ready to get rid of your tattoo permanently, we are here to help. The Maercks Institute provides laser tattoo removal in Miami with the PicoSure laser.
How laser tattoo removal works
The laser uses a pulsing light to break the ink of the tattoo into smaller particles that can be easily absorbed by the body. Once the ink particles have been broken up and dispersed, your body naturally processes these ink particles and flushes them out of the system.
Tattoo removal requires 3-4 treatment sessions or more to completely remove a tattoo. The treatments required depend on the size and age of your tattoo and the depth of the pigment in your skin. Over the series of treatments, you will notice your tattoo getting lighter and lighter until it is completely gone and the skin is blank again.
Candidates for Laser Tattoo Removal
Men or women who have tattoos they no longer want are likely candidates for laser tattoo removal. Ideal candidates meet the following criteria:
- Are in good health with no serious medical concerns
- Are not pregnant or nursing
- Do not have a history of abnormal scarring
- Are not taking retinols
- Have no injuries or skin infections on the treatment area
- Are not tanned on the treatment area
- Ideally, are not currently menstruating
Laser Tattoo Removal Expectations
Before your treatment, we will provide you with protective eye shields and apply topical anesthesia. Some patients are comfortable going without topical anesthesia, so this part of the treatment may vary.
The PicoSure laser will be applied to the skin, where the pigment in the tattoo absorbs the laser energy. This effectively breasts up the tattoo pigment and disperses the ink particles. From there, your body will naturally dispose of these particles and flush them out of the system.
Smaller tattoos are generally reduced more quickly than larger tattoos, but all tattoos require several treatments at least to fully remove them. Your tattoo will become progressively lighter after each treatment period until it is completely gone.
Recovery After Your Tattoo Removal Treatments
There is no downtime after laser tattoo removal, but the area will be sore and tender. In some cases, there will be swelling and blistering.
We will apply an antibiotic cream and bandage to protect the treated skin. While it heals, do not expose it to the sun. Use an ice pack to soothe your skin and help minimize swelling. Follow these aftercare tips to help with the healing process:
- Do not shave the area until it is completely healed.
- Avoid activities such as contact sports that could injur to the treated area.
- Avoid scratching or rubbing the skin.
- Do not immerse the skin in water.
- Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor to help soothe the skin.
