About laser skin resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is most often used to treat the neck and face, although it can also be used on the hands and chest. Using great precision of depth, a MicroLaserPeel treatment removes a superficial, thin layer of damaged skin, leaving behind a more refreshed appearance. These laser skin resurfacing treatments can be personalized to target your unique areas of concerns, skin type, and goals.

Fractional resurfacing: ProFractional therapy

ProFractional therapy is used to improve the overall appearance of the skin, and is used to treat areas of skin all over the body.

This treatment is known as a “fractionated” laser resurfacing, as only portions of the body are treated during each session. As a fraction of the skin is treated with the laser, the affected area promotes rapid tissue growth and the skin produces collagen, adding resilience and firmness to the skin in the treated areas.

The laser skin resurfacing treatment

A MicroLaserPeel treatment only takes about 15 to 30 minutes in our Miami office, depending on the size of the treatment area. Patients can expect very little pain, although a topical numbing cream can be used if you prefer. During the procedure, damaged skin is removed and the texture is improved. A laser beam is used to remove a very thin layer of old, damaged skin by passing over the affected area. This removes damaged cells that make the skin look aged, dull, and tired. Snapping sounds may be heard in rapid succession as the area is treated. After the laser treatment, fresh skin cells grow and cover the treated area with younger, healthier-looking skin. Dr. Maercks will determine exactly how many treatments each patient needs based on the results from the procedure.

Downtime and results

After treatment, the skin may have a “frosty” look that will fade within several days. Patients may also notice some redness, burning, and/or mild swelling that should fade quickly. You will be given ointment and analgesics to moisten the skin and treat any burning sensation.

Be sure to avoid direct UV light until the treated area is fully healed. Patients are typically recovered and able to return to normal activities after about two days, and full benefits — brighter, healthier, more radiant, and youthful-looking skin — are usually visible after 4 to 6 months as the skin health and supplies additional collagen to the area.

FAQ

How much does laser skin resurfacing in Miami cost?

While every patient is different, the average cost of laser skin resurfacing at The Maercks Institute is from $1,200 to $5,500. A more exact cost can be determined during your initial consultation with Dr. Maercks.

Does laser skin resurfacing cause scarring?

It’s rare for laser skin resurfacing to cause scarring, especially when it is performed by a certified medical professional with experience. If you tend to get keloid scars or other excessive scarring, you may not be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. This can be determined during your consultation with Dr. Maercks.

Why is the MicroLaserPeel called “the weekend peel”?

MicroLaserPeel has earned this nickname because the majority of patients only need a few days to recover, making it a great procedure to have done over the weekend. It is very gentle and does not require extensive downtime.

Can MicroLaserPeel be done on any type of skin?

MicroLaserPeel treatments may not be best for those with type V or VI skin, due to the chance of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. If you’re not sure what your skin type is, we can let you know during your consultation.
