With our first-class reputation and advanced methods and technology, we’ve helped thousands of patients increase their confidence and function with a better looking nose. Dr. Maercks designs a bespoke procedure for each individual, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Better known as a nose job, rhinoplasty can correct a variety of functional and cosmetic concerns with the nose.

  • Droopy, bulbous or upturned nasal tip
  • Crooked, wide, or oversized nose
  • Uneven or oversized nostrils
  • Visible depression or bump in the bridge of the nasal profile
  • Anatomical abnormality such as a deviated septum that makes it difficult to breathe normally

Whether you have trouble breathing or sleeping, or just don’t like the way your nose is shaped, rhinoplasty is a valuable tool to help you get the confidence you need in your face.

While each patient is unique and should consult with the plastic surgeon before making a final decision, we are confident in our ability to offer a better-looking, more functional nose to most of our patients.

Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty

If part of your nose bothers you, or you struggle to breathe normally because of the nose’s irregular design or structure, you may be a good candidate for surgery. Patients must quit smoking at least three weeks prior to surgery, and be in good psychological and physical health overall. While we are proud of our results, you should always approach plastic surgery with reasonable expectations to ensure that you are satisfied. We are happy to consult with you and explain exactly what you can expect before your surgery is performed.

During Your Consultation

Rhinoplasty with Dr. Maercks is a truly unique experience.  After reviewing your medical and surgical history and explaining some nuances of rhinoplasty, Dr. Maercks provide you with a profile tracing showing you the most important aesthetic and functional features of your nose.  With a balanced approach in mind Dr. Maercks usually combines facial fat grafting and sometimes chin procedures with rhinoplasty.  Once Dr. Maercks draws his surgical plan he will discuss the exact details and options for modifying the plan.  Instead of asking the patient to describe concerns, Dr. Maercks prefers to directly show the patient his aesthetic conception to initiate the conversation.

Our Approach to Rhinoplasty

With most cosmetic surgeries, there are several options for a doctor to choose from, and that choice may vary based on the patient or the desired outcome. With rhinoplasty, there is a closed or open approach to surgery.

With the closed approach, visible scarring is reduced because incisions are made within the nostrils. The open approach involves an extra incision across the piece of skin between the nostrils. Although most surgeons prefer the open approach, Dr. Maercks rarely deviates from a closed approach.  The main reason is the vascular structures divided in the open approach result in slower healing and prolonged swelling.  Thanks to his international training and extensive experience, Dr. Maercks is able to handle advanced maneuvers and changes without opening the nose.  In rare cases and complex revisions, Dr. Maercks may choose to utilize the open approach.

Depending on whether you are dissatisfied with a bump on the outside of your nose, or the way your nose functions, your plastic surgeon may opt for a closed or open approach. While most surgeons feel the open approach is more effective and comprehensive, we are committed to always doing what is right and best for our patients. If it is not necessary to open up your nose, we will not do so – and will never submit you to complications and risks that aren’t absolutely crucial to your outcome.

How Rhinoplasty is Performed

Rhinoplasty should always be performed in a clean medical facility, and is usually done on an outpatient basis. Patients are sedated and put under anesthesia in order to minimize discomfort and pain during surgery. General anesthesia is performed by a certified anesthesiologist to ensure that the patient is safe and comfortable during the procedure.

Surgical incisions are made within the nostrils to give the surgeon access to the nose to make surgical modifications. This may involve reduction in the nostril size, refining of the nasal tip, or the removing or smoothing of a bump on the nose.

After the procedure, sutures are placed to close the wound and the doctor will cover the nose with a special bandage used for surgery.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Patients are required to rest at the facility after rhinoplasty is complete, until the anesthesia completely wears off. After the patient is released from the facility, a responsible adult should be there to drive them home. The patient should be placed in a comfortable position in bed or on the couch, and have access to medication, soft foods and the necessary liquids without much movement.

The nose and possibly the eye area will be bruised and swollen immediately after surgery. Most of the swelling will go down after a few weeks, and most patients take pain medication to deal with the pain after surgery.

Strenuous activity can increase the chances of bleeding and should be avoided immediately after surgery. While short walks can be good exercise and get the blood flowing, anything more than a leisurely paced stroll should be avoided until you have approval from your physician.

An important part of recovery is keeping up on your follow-up visits and following all the instructions given by your doctor. Visit the doctor to check the progress of your healing and to remove sutures. Your doctor will also advise you when it is safe and healthy for you to return to your regular work and activity schedule after surgery.

Typically, patients notice results of rhinoplasty about two weeks after the surgery, although the final results may not be visible until the nose fully heals. This can take up to a year as residual swelling dissolves and the nose takes its new shape. Patients can cover the bruised area 3-5 days after surgery, and swelling and bruising typically improve within two weeks.

Although the nose continues to age whether you have rhinoplasty or not, the results of a rhinoplasty are considered permanent.

Risks Associated With Rhinoplasty

No surgery is without risk, and the benefits should always be weighed against the chance of complications before you undergo any invasive procedure. Having an experienced surgeon from the Maercks Institute perform your surgery greatly decreases the chances of complications or problems before, during and after surgery.

Potential risks of rhinoplasty include:

  • Alteration of skin sensation
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Poor wound closure and healing
  • Skin discoloration
  • Breathing obstructions

Follow your doctor’s conditions and orders after any surgery to ensure that you enjoy maximum success from your procedure.

Costs of Rhinoplasty

The costs of rhinoplasty differs based on the patient, the location and the doctor, and we are happy to provide you with a detailed cost outline after your initial consultation. Typically, rhinoplasty in Miami can range anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the specifics of the patient’s treatment plan.

Some insurance companies cover part or all of a rhinoplasty procedure, depending on the reasons behind the surgery. The best way to determine if your insurance company covers the costs of your surgery is to contact them before any appointments are scheduled. Insurance companies will typically pay if the surgery is performed to correct a structural defect that causes sinus or breathing problems, or irregularities to the nose that are caused by trauma or injury.
