Juvederm contains a colorless, stabilized hyaluronic acid gel that mimics what the body does naturally. The tissue of the skin naturally contains hyaluronic acid that acts as a volumizer, cell protector and hydrator for the skin. After being used for almost a decade, Juvederm is now available from The Maercks Institute in its injectable form. The product works to replace volume and tissue structure in order to remove moderate facial folds and wrinkles, along with nasolabial folds and wrinkles in other areas of the face.

Many patients prefer Juvederm because it is a natural substance and is biodegradable although the results from the procedure are long lasting. Juvederm replaces lost volume in the face with the use of a substance the body makes naturally.

Juvederm can also be used for:

  • Temporary correction of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Lip augmentation
  • Filling marionette lines
  • Facial contouring

Juvederm comes in two forms. Juvederm Plus XC is used by Dr. Maercks most often for dealing with deeper wrinkles and folds, while Juvederm Ultra XC is used to provide moderate corrections to shallow lines and wrinkles.

What to Expect

The Juvederm process is fairly simple and uncomplicated. Dr. Maercks will look at your individual situation and determine which treatments are best for you, and pinpoint the injection site for the medication. After the area is cleansed thoroughly, Juvederm is injected below the outer skin level. Lidocaine is included in the solution, although Dr. Maercks may also opt to use a topical anesthetic.

After Treatment

Although the injection site may seem overly full, results can be seen almost immediately after the procedure. Patients should typically avoid the following for a full 24 hours after the procedure:

  • Alcohol
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Heat exposure
  • Sun exposure

These things may cause side effects like swelling, itching or redness at the site of the injection. Any swelling can be reduced with an ice pack placed over the site.

Although touch-ups may be necessary, results from Juvederm can least anywhere from 6-12 months.
